“Climate change is the greatest threat facing mankind. Urgent action is required to reduce the carbon emissions that cause climate change.” Friends of the Earth
The environmental impact that man-made emissions are having on the atmosphere is a growing source of worldwide concern. Greenhouse gasses such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons are produced every time we start our cars. Modern engines and catalytic converters go some way towards preventing these harmful substances being emitted into the atmosphere but only if they are operating correctly and efficiently.
Fouling and clogging of the engine and catalytic converter reduces their efficiency which means reducing their ability to burn fuel efficiently in the engine and subsequently neutralise the harmful exhaust gasses in the catalytic converter.
Legislation and International Agreements (Kyoto for instance) exist to try and limit the amounts of harmful emissions with targets set for countries to achieve along a given timeline.
“Climate researchers are warning that efforts to reduce air pollution could, if not well designed, make global warming worse. Air pollution control efforts will add to Global Warming if Carbon Monoxide is not curbed…”
American Geophysical Union
“Today more than half of carbon monoxide emissions are man-made. The highest concentrations of carbon monoxide tend to occur close to areas of high human population. Carbon monoxide in the atmosphere can lead to the formation of the tropospheric greenhouse gas 'ozone'.”
Greenhouse Gas Online
“If our greenhouse gas emissions are not brought under control, the speed of climate change over the next hundred years will be faster than anything known since before the dawn of civilization. There is a very real possibility that climate feedback mechanisms will result in a sudden and irreversible climate shift. No one knows how much global warming it would take to trigger such a "doomsday scenario"”
